Water softening is the removal of calcium, magnesium, and certain other metal cations in hard water. The resulting soft water is more compatible with soap and extends the lifetime of plumbing. Water softening is usually achieved using ion-exchange resins.
Ion-exchange resins are used to replace the magnesium and calcium ions found in hard water with sodium ions. When the resin is fresh, it contains sodium ions at its active sites. When in contact with a solution containing
magnesium and calcium ions (but a low concentration of sodium ions), the magnesium and calcium ions preferentially migrate out of the solution to the active sites on the resin, being replaced in solution by sodium ions. This process reaches equilibrium with a much lower concentration of magnesium and calcium ions in the solution than was started with.

The resin can be recharged by washing it with a solution containing a high concentration of sodium ions (e.g. it has large amounts of common salt, NaCl, dissolved in it).
The calcium and magnesium ions migrate off the resin, being replaced by sodium ions from the solution until a new equilibrium is reached. The salt is used to recharge an ion-exchange resin which itself is used to softening the water.
Why is it important to soften your water?
Hard water causes clogging pipes and mineral deposits and as a result loss of heat exchange, higher consumption of energy, higher consumption of detergent (up to 50-70%) with less cleaning of fabrics, bad cooking, and cracking of the skin.
First of all, softening the water is a process that removes calcium and magnesium which is considered responsible for fouling and opaque stains on dishes, glasses, shower cubicles, appliances, and pipes.
How does a water softener work?
The softener is a device designed to soften the water by reducing the concentration of calcium and magnesium forming limescale deposits on the surfaces.
The principle of its operation is the ion exchange resin. The resins have the ability to absorb the excessive amount of calcium and magnesium salts present in the water. According to how many liters of resin the water softener has, so many liters of water can soften. More liters of resin means more liters of soft water before the regeneration process. The regeneration process cleans the resin in order to be able to soft the next so many liters of hard water.
The five-step regeneration process is fully automatic and takes place at scheduled intervals or according to the volume of softened water, on the day and hour that the user-defined according to the actual consumption and the water hardness. The unit will automatically go into bypass mode during regeneration ensuring the supply of water to users.
